
Four people have been killed and five others injured following violent clashes between residents and herdsmen in Gbeniyiri and surrounding communities in the .
Preliminary reports indicate that the violence erupted after a resident was killed during a robbery attack. Relatives of the victim are said to have launched reprisal attacks targeting herdsmen suspected to be involved in the incident.
Authorities say the latest violence is not linked to earlier communal conflicts in the district that previously claimed several lives and displaced many residents.
Two of the deceased have already been buried in , while the remaining bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Hospital. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at health facilities in the area.
Confirming the development, the District Chief Executive for the area, , explained that the clashes were triggered by a robbery incident in a suburb where a resident was killed while resisting attackers in the bush.
According to him, relatives of the deceased carried out reprisal attacks that escalated into violent clashes, resulting in multiple casualties.
Mr. Saaka added that security has been reinforced in the area and investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
The unrest follows an earlier incident on February 26, 2026, at , where a businessman from the Brefo community was shot and killed by masked assailants while buying cashew.
Reports indicate that the attackers demanded money from the businessman, but he refused, leading to him being shot. The incident was later classified as an armed robbery.
Following the killing, some members of the community alleged that the attackers were Fulani, which reportedly triggered retaliatory attacks in the area.
