In a major political realignment, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam, has officially defected to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Klenam, who served as an MP during the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic, publicly announced her move on Thursday morning after receiving her NDC membership card in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region.

Addressing the press, Klenam explained that her decision was influenced by ideological alignment and confidence in the NDC’s governance approach.

“Upon consultation with my family, I decided to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for mother Ghana,” she stated.

She further endorsed the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, describing it as the most promising roadmap for Ghana’s economic and social transformation. She expressed strong confidence in former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, believing his policies will drive national progress and prosperity.

Beyond her personal political shift, Klenam highlighted her commitment to grassroots engagement. She pledged to work closely with local communities, particularly in creating opportunities for young people to discourage them from seeking opportunities abroad.

Her defection marks a significant political moment, as she previously held a key leadership position under the Akufo-Addo administration as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC).

The NDC has welcomed her move, with party members expressing optimism that her experience and influence will contribute positively to their political strategy ahead of the next elections. As Ghana’s political landscape continues to evolve, Klenam’s defection is expected to generate discussions about party loyalty, policy influence, and shifting allegiances in the country’s political arena.
