Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has commented on the speculation surrounding Mohammed Kudus’ potential transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Gyan expressed his views on Kudus’ possible move to the Middle East, emphasizing that football should be approached as a business, even if it is driven by passion. He acknowledged the difficult decision facing the West Ham United star, who has had an outstanding debut season in the Premier League, making him one of Europe’s most sought-after players.
Recent reports indicate that Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad is keen on signing the Ghanaian international, offering a lucrative salary package.
According to ESPN, Al Ittihad aims to make Kudus their next major acquisition, following their signings of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante last year.
Gyan, who transferred from Sunderland to UAE’s Al Ain in 2011 at the age of 25, believes Kudus has the potential to further his career in Europe. However, he also supports the idea of players securing their financial future when the opportunity arises.
“If the reports are true, it’s a very tough decision. I can’t decide for him; it depends on his advisors. He is young, but if you consider the business aspect of the game, despite our passion, football is a business,” the former Ghana captain told Asaase Radio.
“In Ghana, my name is only mentioned when the Black Stars are playing. Many players have died after retirement without any recognition. People who want to see you in the EPL often have their personal interests at heart.”
Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals and the second most-capped player with 109 appearances.
