A peace ceremony aimed at reconciling students from Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute turned chaotic, leaving at least five students severely injured and several others with minor wounds.
The event, held on Tuesday, February 25, at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with Kpalwega traditional rulers to end recurring clashes between the two institutions.
As part of the reconciliation efforts, traditional leaders proposed the burial of an okra stick—a symbolic ritual meant to foster lasting peace. However, tensions flared during the proceedings, and students from both schools began throwing stones at each other, disrupting the event and causing multiple injuries.
The Bawku Divisional Police Command swiftly intervened to restore order, while the injured students were rushed to Quality and Vineyard hospitals in Bawku for medical treatment.
Despite the chaos, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) managed to complete the ritual with the participation of the senior prefects from both schools, signaling their commitment to maintaining peace between the rival institutions.
