The first direct international flight, operated by Ethiopian Airlines (ETH8719), landed at the newly designated Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi on Friday, December 6, 2024, at approximately 10:30 AM.

This marks a historic milestone for the Ashanti Region’s capital, as Kumasi becomes the first destination in Ghana outside Accra to host a direct international flight. Traditional leaders and residents welcomed the passengers with vibrant drumming and dancing, celebrating the achievement.

The inaugural flight, originally scheduled for December 3, faced delays attributed to short notice, according to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). Despite initial skepticism from the public, the flight underscores Kumasi’s growing significance as a travel and economic hub.

The route, a collaboration between Ethiopian Airlines and GACL, directly links London Gatwick to Kumasi. This move is expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment in the region. Travelers who previously relied on connecting flights through Accra now have a convenient and cost-effective alternative.

Impact on Travelers and the Economy

  • Tourism: International tourists can now more easily access Kumasi’s rich historical and cultural heritage, such as the Manhyia Palace and Kejetia Market.
  • Business: Entrepreneurs and investors will benefit from a streamlined route, fostering economic ties between the UK and Ghana.
  • Trade: The flight is anticipated to facilitate smoother import and export processes, enhancing Ghana’s trade relations with Europe.

This development aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to expand its global connectivity, emphasizing regional development and international cooperation. The direct flight is a pivotal step toward positioning Kumasi as a key player in global travel and commerce.
