A major fire broke out at the Central Warehouse of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale on Sunday afternoon, destroying critical electrical equipment, including over 20 transformers and an unspecified number of insulators.

The fire, which ignited around 2 p.m., also damaged an electric pole with a transformer that supplies power to the warehouse. However, quick action by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) prevented the fire from spreading further.

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Baba Hudu, praised the swift and effective response of fire personnel. “We had a distress call at 1400 hours and immediately dispatched two fire tenders from the Tamale Metro Fire Station and the Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station. Due to the intensity of the fire, we had to use foam concentrate to extinguish it,” he explained.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Investigations are expected to be conducted to determine what sparked the blaze.

NEDCo’s Corporate Communications Manager, Maxwell Kotoka, reassured the public that the fire would not impact power supply to external areas. “The destruction only affected outdoor electrical materials and a transformer that supplies power to the warehouse. We are working hard to restore power to the facility. No external areas or institutions have been affected,” he stated.
