Operations at Kumasi-based Pure FM have come to a halt after a fire ravaged the station’s studio on Wednesday evening, July 23, around 7:30 p.m., during a live broadcast.
General Manager and veteran broadcaster Kwame Adinkrah confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was first detected when smoke began pouring from an air conditioning unit. A DJ on duty attempted to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher, but the blaze spread rapidly due to the flammable materials in the studio.
Despite support from nearby shop owners and passersby, the fire could not be contained until the Ghana National Fire Service arrived.
Adinkrah revealed that the DJ was briefly trapped inside the studio due to its digital locking system and heavy smoke, but managed to escape without injury—a survival he described as “divine intervention.”
While the building itself was spared, all studio equipment was lost, except for the transmitter, which is housed in Patase.
The station had reportedly been running on generator power for most of the day due to an earlier power outage. Although power was later restored, it is unclear whether an electrical phase change contributed to the incident.
Apologizing to listeners for the disruption, Mr. Adinkrah assured the public that the station is working towards a swift comeback. He also appealed to business partners and supporters for continued prayers and support during the recovery process.
