Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta Announces Inclusion of Long-Term Relief for Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims in 2024 Budget

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed that the 2024 budget will include provisions for the long-term relief of victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Following a visit to the affected areas and discussions with the media, Ofori-Atta emphasized that the government’s support will extend beyond immediate assistance.

 

“We have mobilized resources to address the needs of the affected communities. It’s not just about numbers; we want to provide real support,” he stated. This commitment to addressing the social impact of the spillage will be reflected in the upcoming budget.

During his visit to the North Tongu District Assembly in Mepe, the Finance Minister donated GHS2 million to assist flood victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Divine Osborne Fenu, the District Chief Executive, received the donation.

 

Ofori-Atta expressed the Ministry of Finance’s concern for those affected and expressed gratitude for the spontaneous response of Ghanaians to the situation.

 

In related developments, Seji Saji Amedonu, the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), reported that water levels have begun to recede. Based on the current rate of decline, it is estimated that it will take approximately one week for the water levels to return to normal.
