Faustina Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Shia woman to win a parliamentary seat in Ghana. She secured a decisive victory in the Dome Kwabenya constituency during the 2024 general elections, marking a significant triumph for the opposition party.
The fiercely contested election saw Akurugu wrest the seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which had long held the constituency. Her win is seen as a major boost for the NDC, reaffirming its presence in a constituency considered one of its strongholds.
Akurugu’s success is attributed to her dynamic campaign strategy and strong grassroots support, which helped her secure a commanding majority over her competitors. Her historic victory is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the NDC’s resilience as it prepares for the upcoming general elections.
