Evelyn Korang, a former Eastern Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made history as the first woman elected to represent the Eastern Region on the Council of State.
In a keenly contested election, she secured 17 votes out of the 66 ballots cast, defeating her closest contender, Nana Afia Asante Afrifah, who garnered 12 votes. Other candidates included Asiedu Ofei (nine votes), John Owusu-Amankrah (eight votes), Glenda Mills-Theile (four votes), and Yaw Adu-Amponsah, Nana Effah Opinamang III, Seth Adjei Baah, and Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso IV, who each received three votes. Nana Asante Yamoah Afrifah and Asare Kwaku Kwatia polled two votes each, while 13 contestants failed to secure any votes.
In her victory speech, Mrs. Korang expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in her and pledged to work diligently to represent the interests of the region. She assured the chiefs and people of the Eastern Region that she would collaborate closely with President John Mahama and other key stakeholders to improve the socio-economic conditions of the region.
She also called for the support of the people to enable her to carry out her duties effectively.
The election, conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Regional Coordinating Council, was peaceful and devoid of any disturbances.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who was visibly delighted, congratulated Mrs. Korang on her victory, stating that her election signified positive developments for the region.
