John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Ghanaians to vote against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December elections, citing economic mismanagement as a major concern.
Speaking to supporters in Ayawaso East, Mahama used the soaring price of Kenkey—a staple Ghanaian dish—as a symbol of the hardships endured under the NPP government. He criticized the significant rise in the cost of living, including food prices, and accused the government of failing to manage the economy effectively.
Mahama recalled past criticisms from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP regarding his administration’s economic policies, arguing that the current government has performed worse.
“Akufo-Addo said we were sitting on money yet we were hungry, but at the time, Kenkey was GH¢1. Now, three balls of Kenkey cost GH¢15, and with a fish, it’s GH¢20,” Mahama remarked, urging voters to hold the NPP accountable.
He emphasized the need for a change in leadership to address the economic challenges, highlighting rising inflation and declining living standards as evidence of the government’s failures.
Mahama’s comments in Ayawaso East mirror sentiments expressed earlier in the Western North Region, where he also criticized the government’s inability to curb inflation and improve food security.
