The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) prohibiting the presence of firearms, including those carried by security personnel, at polling stations during the 2024 general elections.
The directive is part of measures outlined by the IGP, who heads the elections security task force. Military intervention during the elections will only occur as a last resort and will require the IGP’s express authorization.
Speaking after a police briefing on security preparations with political parties, Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, affirmed the party’s support for the initiative and their commitment to working collaboratively with security agencies.
“We are pleased that the security agencies are advocating for no firearms at polling stations. This is a positive step. Additionally, we are reassured that any military involvement will require authorization from the IGP as the Commander-in-Chief of the elections security task force,” Boamah stated.
He emphasized the importance of the IGP’s sole authority in this matter, noting, “This ensures that responsibility for any military intervention rests solely with the IGP, fostering accountability and reducing the likelihood of unnecessary force during the elections.”
The NDC also anticipates smooth cooperation with security personnel during the special voting scheduled for December 2, 2024.
