Former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that it would be a mistake for Ghanaians to re-elect the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections. Mahama emphasized that the outcome of the election is critical for the country’s future and that investors are closely watching the results before deciding to invest in Ghana.
Speaking at the Palace of the Zugraan, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, on the first day of his campaign tour in the Upper East Region, Mahama urged voters to reject the NPP due to the economic hardships and crises the country has faced under their administration. He argued that a vote for the NPP would signal contentment with the current state of affairs, which he believes is not the case for many Ghanaians.
Mahama also criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government for what he termed “State capture” over the past eight years, asserting that the NDC would hold those responsible for the economic difficulties accountable if they win the election. He assured that the same level of accountability would be applied to NDC officials if they engaged in similar misconduct.
Responding to a request from the Zugraan for the creation of a new region in Bawku to cover the six constituencies and enhance governance and security, Mahama expressed support. He acknowledged Bawku as a special security zone and stated that the area meets the criteria for population, land size, and economic viability necessary for regional status. He pledged his support for the proposal, emphasizing its justification based on the outlined criteria.
Mahama was accompanied by notable figures including Professor Joshua Alabi, the Chairman of the campaign team, MP Mahama Ayariga, MP Cletus Apul Avoka, former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and his Spokesperson Joyce Bawah Mogtari, among other party officials and parliamentary candidates. The campaign tour aims to engage with chiefs, queen mothers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to share Mahama’s vision for the country if re-elected as President.
