The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly refuted recent reports suggesting that it would not field presidential candidates for the upcoming 2024 elections. In a memo addressed to its members on Wednesday, June 26, the party clarified that it is actively engaged in finalizing its preparations to select candidates for both presidential and parliamentary positions.
“The Independent Committee of the CPP wishes to debunk this information. For the avoidance of doubt, the Party is currently finalising an organisational programme of activities leading to selection of candidates to contest the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections,” the statement from the party read.
The memo also assured party members that a detailed programme outlining the selection process will be communicated by the following week, urging them to refrain from actions that could undermine the party’s internal cohesion.
Chairperson Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma echoed these sentiments in an exclusive interview with 3news.com, asserting the CPP’s readiness to participate in the upcoming polls. She confirmed her intention to contest for the party’s presidential candidacy, dispelling doubts about the party’s commitment.
“I’m definitely coming as a Presidential Candidate so do not want to engage too much on internal issues,” she stated firmly, emphasizing her preparedness to lead the CPP in the electoral race.
Addressing the internal dynamics, Chairperson Kumankuma acknowledged the challenges faced by the CPP, including internal wranglings and the need to enhance its appeal to voters. Despite these challenges, the party remains determined to present a competitive front in the elections, striving to broaden its support base and reconnect with the electorate.
The CPP’s stance reaffirms its resilience and commitment to participate actively in Ghana’s democratic process, aiming to offer viable leadership alternatives to the electorate in the upcoming elections.
