Eight people have been killed after gunmen blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, close to Walewale, and opened fire on travelers. The attackers set up roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale Town, interrogating passengers to identify specific targets, resulting in two vehicles being torched.
A survivor described the scene, stating, “I was travelling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for over an hour, but security did not respond.”
This attack is believed to be linked to the recurring Bawku Conflict, which has recently reignited after a period of calm. In response, the Ghana Police Service has announced increased security presence along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure the safety of travelers. Joint police and military deployments are also in place to enhance security, as authorities strive to maintain peace in Bawku and its surrounding areas.
