Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno has confirmed the arrest of eight suspects linked to violent incidents during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.
The rerun, held in 19 polling stations on July 11, was marred by assaults on three journalists and some political figures, drawing widespread condemnation. Videos of individuals believed to be party operatives attacking citizens and observers quickly circulated online, sparking public outcry.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP revealed that the suspects were picked up by the Accra Regional Police Command and are being prepared for prosecution.
“As of yesterday, eight suspects have been arrested. They are being processed and, based on advice from the Regional Commander, they will appear before court tomorrow or Friday,” Dr. Yohuno said.
He assured that the police will ensure justice and hold accountable all those found culpable, including officers who failed to act professionally during the disturbances.
“We are making progress, and we will make sure that justice is served. Anyone who did not act professionally will also be dealt with,” he stressed.
The IGP reaffirmed the police administration’s zero tolerance for misconduct, noting that the integrity of elections and public trust depends on the professionalism of law enforcement.
