Mrs. Efua Ghartey has achieved a historic milestone by being elected as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
The election was held during the GBA congress in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the Association’s history.
Her victory is seen as a significant development, bringing fresh leadership to the GBA, with expectations that her tenure will introduce new perspectives to Ghana’s legal landscape.
Mrs. Ghartey garnered 1,278 votes, surpassing her closest competitor, Agbesi Dzakpasu, who received 1,060 votes.
A lawyer with over three decades of experience, Mrs. Ghartey had previously made two unsuccessful bids for the presidency, narrowly losing to Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo by 67 and 65 votes, respectively.
Despite these setbacks, she remained determined, continuously expressing her desire to lead the Association over the past six years.
In the race for Vice President, Victoria Barth emerged victorious with 1,624 votes, defeating Ebenezer Kwaitoo, who secured 495 votes.
Barth, a renowned legal professional, has had an impressive academic career at the Ghana School of Law, where she has mentored many young lawyers.
