The Electoral Commission (EC) has introduced new measures to facilitate voting for prison inmates, students, and security personnel.
At the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday in Accra, the EC announced that from July 3rd to 5th, 2024, these groups will be permitted to transfer their votes to the constituencies where they currently reside.
This initiative includes prison inmates who are not registered voters. They will be registered during the Mop-Up limited voter registration exercise from August 1st to 3rd, 2024.
Students wishing to transfer their votes to their campus constituencies must present their student ID cards as proof of enrollment. However, students will not be able to transfer their votes from campus to other constituencies.
Political party agents are authorized to observe the transfer process at EC District offices and the 25 campuses where the recent limited voter registration exercise was conducted.
Additionally, proxy applications by security personnel on special duties who will be unavailable to vote have been scheduled for July 3rd to 5th. Political party agents can observe the proxy process, including the capture of biometrics of both the original voter and their proxy.
The EC also announced that the compilation of the Special Voters List will take place from July 6th to 7th, 2024. Security personnel designated for special duties must appear in their uniforms with their voter ID cards at EC District offices for verification as Special Voters.
The EC will review all proxy applications that did not undergo biometric capture and report at the next IPAC meeting.
Lastly, the EC has requested IT technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to assist in preparations for the December 7th presidential and parliamentary elections, underscoring their commitment to ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process.
