Dr. Bawumia Commissions 100 Electric Buses to Boost Public Transport

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, has officially launched 100 electric buses to enhance transportation services and reduce fares across Ghana.

The buses, which commenced operations on November 28, 2024, will serve routes within Accra and other major cities, marking the first step in Dr. Bawumia’s broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the link between rising fuel prices and transport fare increases, stressing the need for cost-effective alternatives.

“The time has come for Ghanaians to move freely without worrying about transport fare hikes due to rising fuel prices,” he stated.

The newly commissioned buses are part of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) fleet. Dr. Bawumia expressed pride in spearheading this innovative shift, despite initial skepticism when he proposed transitioning Ghana’s public transport system to electric vehicles.

“I am elated to commission the first batch of electric buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited, a significant step towards revolutionizing public transport services and reducing our carbon footprint,” he noted.

The initiative also signals a broader push to adopt electric vehicles across the entire public transport sector, with Dr. Bawumia emphasizing that innovation will remain at the heart of his policies.
