Dormaahene and Asantehene Clash Over Ancestral Claims

In a recent development, Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu I, has issued a firm response to claims made by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding the historical elevation of the Dormaa stool to paramountcy. The Dormaahene refuted Otumfuo’s assertion that it was his uncle who played a role in elevating the Dormaa chieftaincy.

Speaking at an event in Dormaa, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu I contested the Asantehene’s claims, emphasizing that the Dormaa stool has a long history that predates the Asantehene stool. He asserted that there was no way an Asantehene could have elevated the Dormaahene to paramount chief status.

Addressing the matter, he stressed the importance of correcting historical inaccuracies that have arisen due to the Asantehene’s statements. Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu I highlighted the need to set the record straight, expressing concern that such distortions were affecting the history of the Dormaa people.

The Dormaahene’s stance was clear as he declared, “I want to tell every Ghanaian that we, the people of Adiana, are not from the Ashanti Kingdom. It is never true. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the leader of the Ashantis, and we implore him to refrain from making inaccurate historical claims about the people of Dormaa.”

He further clarified, “I want to place it on record with no contradiction that the stool of the people of Adiana in Dormaa existed 300 years before that of the Ashantis was established. So, if there is to be an elevation, it is not us who are to elevate them.”

While reiterating his respect for the Ashantis, the Dormaahene expressed his intention to continue responding to any incorrect claims about the Dormaa people by the Asantehene. He urged his subjects not to resort to insults but to counter such claims with factual information.

On the other side of this historical dispute, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, addressed the issue during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace. He shared historical details about the induction of the predecessor of the current Dormaahene and emphasized the need to revisit history to counter attempts to distort it.

This dispute highlights a significant historical disagreement between the Dormaahene and the Asantehene, raising questions about the accuracy of historical accounts and the dynamics of royal politics in the region. Both leaders are resolute in their positions, promising to respond to each other’s statements on the matter.
