The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to withhold the July 2024 salaries of all teaching staff of the Colleges of Education (CETAG), except for the College Principals.
This directive comes in response to an ongoing strike by CETAG members that started in June this year.
The strike is being held to protest the government’s delay in implementing the arbitral award and the negotiated service conditions.
In a letter dated Monday, July 22, GTEC stated, “Following the Minister of Education’s concern regarding CETAG members’ refusal to call off an illegal strike since June 2024, you are hereby requested to withhold the July 2024 salaries of all teaching staff of the Colleges of Education (CETAG) except for the College Principals.”
The letter further instructed College Principals not to validate the July 2024 salaries of all teaching staff.
In response, the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association has vowed to resist any unlawful attempt to freeze their members’ salaries.
CETAG has committed to intensifying their indefinite strike until the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions are implemented.
The association asserts that their strike is legal and has accused the National Labour Commission of spreading false information about their actions.
