Democracy Hub Protest: Pregnant Woman Among 39 Remanded for Two Weeks

A pregnant woman named Vera was among 39 individuals remanded for two weeks following the Democracy Hub protest in Accra. Vera, four months pregnant, claims she was mistakenly arrested alongside her husband while returning from church on Sunday.

She expressed her frustration outside the Accra court, stating, “Me and my man, we were not even protesting. And then you take us.” According to Vera, her family was unaware of her arrest for 48 hours.

The protest, led by the Democracy Hub group, focused on issues such as illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement. The group of 39 was transported under heavy security to and from court.

Meanwhile, a bench warrant has been issued for one protester who failed to appear in court, and #FixTheCountry convenor Oliver Baker-Vormawor is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

The case has been adjourned to October 8.
