The death toll from the tragic building collapse at Accra New Town has risen to three, as rescue operations continue to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.
Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed the updated figure on March 30, noting that the number had increased from the initial two fatalities reported shortly after the incident. The collapse involved an uncompleted three-storey structure located within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, which was also being used by Christian worshippers.
Emergency teams from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and the National Ambulance Service have been working through the night under floodlights to rescue victims and stabilise the situation.
Authorities say a total of 23 people were involved in the incident, with three fatalities—a male and two females—while 20 others are receiving treatment at various health facilities, including the Police Hospital, Mamobi Hospital, and a private facility.
The Minister explained that officials undertook extensive verification processes, including cross-checking hospital records and data from emergency agencies, to ensure the accuracy of the casualty figures. He also noted that women and minors make up a significant portion of those affected, although none of the deceased are minors.
The collapse occurred following a heavy rainstorm, with residents initially leading rescue efforts using basic tools before emergency services arrived. Reports indicate that some victims were heard calling for help from beneath the debris, intensifying the urgency of the rescue mission.
While several individuals have been rescued, concerns remain that others could still be trapped. Authorities have assured that rescue operations will continue as efforts shift toward accounting for all persons involved.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, with officials indicating that a full investigation will be conducted once rescue efforts are concluded.
