A devastating head-on collision between a VIP bus and a cargo truck has resulted in several deaths and left dozens injured on the Accra–Kumasi Highway near Oframase, close to Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality.
The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, June 25, when a VIP bus with registration number GR-2399 collided with a truck transporting flour. The impact was so severe that some victims were reportedly mutilated beyond recognition.
Emergency responders from the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and the Kwahu West Municipal Fire Department swiftly arrived at the scene. Both vehicles have since been removed to clear the highway and ease traffic congestion.
Dozens of injured passengers have been transported to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment. An official death toll has not yet been released, as authorities face challenges identifying the deceased due to the condition of the bodies.
While investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, some road users have blamed the poor state of the highway, citing deep potholes and lack of timely road maintenance as contributing factors.
The Ghana Police Service and other relevant agencies are expected to issue a detailed report on the incident in the coming days, as the nation mourns yet another tragic loss on one of its busiest road networks.
