A land dispute at Akwatia Line in the Ashanti Region has turned deadly, leaving one person dead and two others injured following a controversial demolition exercise on Wednesday, April 1.
According to eyewitness accounts, a private developer claiming ownership of the disputed land—currently under litigation—arrived at the site with police personnel and began demolishing structures.
Residents say they were caught off guard, insisting that no prior notice had been given before the exercise commenced. The sudden action led to the displacement of hundreds of people, many of whom lost their homes and personal belongings in the process.
Although the residents acknowledge that they are not the legal owners of the land, they argue that the ongoing court case should have prevented any party from undertaking such actions without due process.
Tensions escalated during the demolition, resulting in violence that claimed one life and left two others injured. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.
Affected residents are now calling on government and relevant authorities to intervene and provide compensation for their losses, as well as ensure justice is served.
The Manhyia District Police Command has since restored calm in the area and confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident.
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash and to hold those responsible accountable.
