Court Injunction Bars Cynthia Morrison from Running as Independent Candidate for Agona West

A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru has issued an injunction preventing Cynthia Morrison from contesting as an independent parliamentary candidate for Agona West in the Central Region.

Morrison, who won the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in both 2016 and 2020, chose to run independently after claiming that the party unfairly sidelined her in the internal primaries.

The court order, issued by the magistrate, prohibits Morrison from presenting herself as a parliamentary candidate until the case is “fully resolved.” With the 2024 elections just under two months away, there is a possibility that the case might not be concluded before the election.

Even if it is resolved in time, the injunction could cost Morrison valuable days, weeks, or months of campaign time.

Morrison, who has served as a minister of state and is currently the sitting Member of Parliament for Agona West, could be significantly impacted by this ruling.

If such decisions set a precedent, it could open the door for any individual to file injunctions against strong candidates shortly before elections, potentially influencing voter choice and altering the outcome.

This development could have negative implications for Ghana’s democratic process, especially since Morrison has consistently alleged that the ruling NPP orchestrated moves against her candidacy, prompting her decision to run as an independent candidate.
