In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, the Madina District Court has discharged Mr. Daniel Owusu Koranteng. The decision follows a detailed review of the case file by the Office of the Attorney-General (A-G) and subsequent legal advice to the prosecution.
The court, presided over by Her Worship Susan D. Nyakote, ruled that the prosecution’s case did not meet the evidentiary threshold required to sustain charges of abetment of murder and murder against the accused.
According to the Attorney-General’s legal opinion, a thorough analysis of the police docket revealed that the alleged call records linking Mr. Koranteng to the crime were inconclusive and failed to establish any direct or circumstantial connection between him and the murder. Furthermore, none of the police sketches based on eyewitness descriptions matched the physical features of the accused.
In light of these findings, the Attorney-General directed that the prosecution discontinue proceedings against Mr. Koranteng and focus instead on identifying and apprehending the two unknown gunmen believed to have carried out the fatal shooting. The perpetrators remain at large six years after the killing.
The prosecution informed the court that it was acting on the Attorney-General’s instructions to discharge the accused. Mr. Koranteng, dressed in a white shirt symbolizing peace and vindication, appeared in court alongside his lawyers, Emma-Jean Markin, Esq., and Frederick Gurah Sampson, Esq.
