Concerned Drivers Association Pauses Planned 15% Fare Increase

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has halted its planned 15% rise in transport fares, initially set to start on Monday, July 22, 2024.

This proposed increase was due to the escalating costs of fuel and essential spare parts needed for the transportation sector.

Nevertheless, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) advised commuters to disregard the fare hike announcement.

David Agboado, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, explained to Citi Business News that the timing for the fare increase would further burden the public, leading to the decision to suspend it.

“We, the transport operators, have deliberated and reached a consensus. Although costs for fuel, spare parts, and other essentials have risen, this is not the appropriate time to increase transport fares. Therefore, we have decided not to proceed with the fare hike,” he stated.

Agboado also urged commercial drivers to maintain the current fares until a more suitable time for an increase is determined.

“My advice to fellow drivers is to remain patient. We were appointed to represent their interests, and this decision is also in their best interest. They should not be upset; the right time for a fare increase will come,” he added.
