A Chief State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney-General, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, has been disbarred from practicing law in Ghana by the General Legal Council (GLC). This action comes as a result of his acceptance of GH¢400,000 from businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome in 2011.

The Disciplinary Committee of the GLC found Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh guilty of professional misconduct under Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613).

In a notice dated January 31, 2024, the GLC stated that while defending the state against a suit by Woyome in 2011, Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh personally facilitated the direct transfer of GH¢400,000 from Woyome to the bank account of his wife.

The GLC noted that Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh failed to provide any reasonable explanation for the transfer of the GH¢400,000 into his wife’s bank account from Mr. Woyome. This conduct was deemed to have negatively impacted “the dignity and high standing of the legal profession.”

As a result of this finding, the GLC has prohibited Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh from holding himself out as a lawyer, attending chambers, or providing any professional legal services to the public. His practicing license has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The notice announcing Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh’s disbarment was signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng.
