President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office with immediate effect, following the recommendation of a Committee of Inquiry set up under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision, announced on Monday, September 1, 2025, was based on the Committee’s findings after investigating a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori. The petition called for the Chief Justice’s removal on grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1).
In its report, the Committee concluded that the allegations had been proven, recommending her dismissal. Under Article 146(9), the President is constitutionally bound to act in line with the Committee’s recommendation.
A statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the removal, emphasizing that the process was conducted in strict compliance with constitutional procedures.
Both the petitioner and the Chief Justice were given full opportunity to present their cases before the Committee, the statement added.
