Chief Imam Mourns Ayatollah Khamenei, Calls for End to Hostilities

The National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed condolences to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Iranian state media reported that Khamenei died on Sunday, March 1, after a major attack launched on February 28, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties and injuries. He was 86.

In a statement dated Tuesday, March 3, the Chief Imam conveyed sorrow over the loss of lives and urged all parties involved to respect national sovereignty, human dignity, and the sanctity of Ramadan. He described the development as a moment of profound grief for the global Islamic community.

He portrayed Ayatollah Khamenei as a devoted leader who combined public service with religious commitment, noting what he described as the compatibility of faith and governance in promoting social order and national development.

The Chief Imam condemned what he termed US–Israeli aggression and called for an immediate end to hostilities, stressing that escalating rhetoric must give way to peace-building efforts.

He further emphasised the importance of interfaith harmony and advocated for a renewed global order anchored on the principle of “right over might” to strengthen international peace and security.

The statement concluded with prayers for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and others who have died in the conflict.
