Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling all bail conditions.
Wontumi’s legal team had initially filed a motion on May 30, 2025, at the High Court to request a review of the GH¢50 million bail, describing it as excessive and a hindrance to his release. However, the motion was officially withdrawn on Monday, June 2 — a day before its scheduled hearing.
Though Wontumi had met the bail terms, including providing two justified sureties by May 30, his release was delayed due to the pending bail review motion, which his lawyers later revealed was filed without his direct consent.
His arrest and prolonged detention ignited significant political tension:
- May 29: Minority MPs staged a parliamentary walkout and demonstrated at EOCO headquarters, demanding his release.
- NPP supporters also protested by blocking roads near EOCO’s offices in Accra.
Wontumi was initially arrested by the CID on May 27 and later transferred to EOCO. He was granted bail on May 28 but only released after the motion for bail review was dropped and all conditions were confirmed met.
His legal counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has reiterated that the matter is now resolved, and Wontumi is free.
