In a recent development, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has vehemently refuted accusations of making derogatory remarks about the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asante Kingdom. The alleged comments were purportedly made during the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants in the region.
Contrary to reports, Chairman Wontumi expressed deep respect for Otumfuo and the Asante Kingdom, dismissing the allegations as “pure lies” during a statement on Wontumi Radio. The Chief of Kokoso, Nana Kwaku Duah, and Manhyia South NPP Constituency Chairman Ofori Attah Tom-Tom lodged an official complaint with the Kumasi Traditional Council, prompting them to summon Chairman Wontumi for questioning on January 22.
Addressing the situation, Chairman Wontumi insisted, “I have a lot of respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom and will never do anything to run this kingdom down, never.” However, the Kumasi Traditional Council remains steadfast, urging the NPP leadership to ensure Chairman Wontumi appears before the council next week Monday to clarify the allegations.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, accompanied by regional party officers, visited the Manhyia Palace in response to the summons. General Secretary Frimpong informed the Council that Chairman Wontumi is currently unwell and requested a two-week extension to allow him to honor the invitation.
The Council, composed of members from the Ashanti Kingdom’s clan, expressed outrage over the alleged remarks and insisted that Chairman Wontumi must appear before them, even if he needs to use a wheelchair. The situation continues to unfold, with heightened tension surrounding the claims against Chairman Wontumi and the impending council hearing.
