CETAG Withdraws All Services Following July Salary Freeze Directive

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has ceased all operations in response to the government’s order to freeze their salaries for July.

On July 22, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to withhold the salaries of all CETAG members participating in the strike, with the exception of the Principals, for the month of July 2024.

Reacting to this mandate, CETAG issued a statement on Tuesday, July 23, declaring the suspension of all its services in response to the Minister of Education’s directive.

“In an emergency meeting of the National Council held on July 23, the council members unanimously decided to suspend all our services, including participation in meetings, congregation ceremonies, academic counseling, and supervision of students in the halls of residence, effective immediately and until further notice,” the statement said.

The association also indicated that they have consulted their lawyers regarding the legality of the salary freeze directive and are seeking necessary legal action.

In the meantime, GTEC has called on the striking CETAG members to return to the classrooms, assuring them that their grievances are being addressed.
