CDM Calls on Mahama to Revoke Dr. Asiama’s Appointment as BoG Governor

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The group argues that unresolved allegations linked to Dr. Asiama’s role in Ghana’s financial sector crisis raise serious concerns about transparency and accountability.

Dr. Asiama was among nine individuals charged over the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, facing accusations of fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, and violations of the Bank of Ghana Act. These charges stemmed from the financial sector cleanup that led to the revocation of several banking licenses.

Despite the withdrawal of legal charges against him, CDM believes his appointment undermines ethical governance and could harm investor confidence. The group insists that restoring trust in Ghana’s financial institutions requires merit-based appointments, free from political considerations.

CDM has warned that if President Mahama does not revoke the appointment, it will petition international organizations, including the European Union, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, to intervene.
