Catholic Archdiocese of Accra to Lead Environmental Prayer Protest Against Galamsey today

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious Ghana, is organizing an “Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey” today, October 11, 2024.

This protest seeks to address the devastating impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on Ghana’s environment.

The event, aimed at uniting Ghanaians from various walks of life, calls for urgent national action to end the menace, which threatens the country’s water bodies, forests, and farmlands.

The Church is advocating for a state of emergency to be declared on mining in environmentally sensitive areas.

This comes as rivers like the Pra and Ankobra face severe pollution from mercury and toxic chemicals used in illegal mining operations.
