CAF Inspects Accra and Cape Coast Stadia for Potential Approval to Host AFCON Qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has inspected the Accra and Cape Coast stadiums for potential approval to host category C matches, following the suspension of Baba Yara Stadium’s license due to its poor playing surface, as reported by Joy Sports.

Ghana is currently without a certified venue for international fixtures, leading the country to consider hosting its upcoming doubleheader against Sudan abroad in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

CAF inspectors visited the two stadiums over the weekend after the Ministry of Sports requested the inspections in an effort to avoid the embarrassment of playing these important matches outside the country. Earlier, the Ministry had asked the Ghana Football Association to appeal to CAF for a reinspection of the Accra, Legon, and Cape Coast stadiums.

If either stadium meets CAF’s standards, Ghana is expected to receive temporary approval to host the October AFCON qualifiers.

During a recent Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports meeting, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif and the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Seth Panwum, assured that Ghana’s home match against Sudan would be played locally.

The Black Stars are scheduled to host Sudan on Friday, October 11, before traveling to Libya for the return fixture at the Martyrs of February Stadium on Monday, October 14. Ghana currently sits third in Group F with just one point from two matches.
