Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has clarified that claims about the dismissal of 100 staff at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) are inaccurate, stating that the affected individuals were only on probation and not permanently employed.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, June 27, Ayariga explained that the individuals in question were part of a recruitment process initiated during the final days of the previous Akufo-Addo administration. They were engaged on a six-month probationary basis.
“They were people who were recruited in the dying days of the administration of the previous government, and they were taken on a six-month probation,” he said. “The person who put them on probation doesn’t think they should continue. If you fail a probation, the person is entitled not to permanently engage you.”
His comments come amid calls by the Minority Caucus for the BoG Governor to appear before Parliament and provide clarification on the situation.
However, Ayariga revealed that following appeals and interventions, the BoG Governor has extended the probation period for the affected individuals by another six months, offering them a second chance to demonstrate their capabilities.
“Upon pleas and intervention, he has extended their probation for another six months to allow them to prove themselves,” he added.
