BoG Cash Boxes Found at Sapeiman Counterfeit Hub, National Security Launches Probe

National Security operatives have uncovered official Bank of Ghana (BoG) money boxes at the centre of a sophisticated counterfeiting ring in Sapeiman, sparking widespread concerns over financial system breaches and potential insider involvement.

Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, confirmed during an exclusive media tour of the scene that the boxes were verified as authentic BoG property. “Authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,” he stated, adding to the gravity of the discovery.

The February raid exposed a major forgery operation hidden behind a battery-charging shop façade run by a man known locally as the “Battery Doctor.” Investigators found ten 40-foot containers stuffed with counterfeit Ghanaian cedi and US dollar bills, along with fake gold bars that had begun peeling to reveal silver-colored metal.

Two containers believed to be part of the operation were allegedly moved just before the raid.

A manhunt is underway for the alleged ringleader, identified only as “Alhaji,” who is suspected to be part of a wider criminal network. Authorities say strong evidence ties him directly to the operation.
