The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn its approval for the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana, citing multiple technical deficiencies, including an unsuitable playing field. The decision follows the September 5, 2024, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola, during which CAF officials noted significant concerns.
The stadium, known for hosting numerous high-profile matches, including World Cup qualifiers, was found to have several issues: uneven playing surfaces, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover. These factors contributed to CAF’s conclusion that the stadium no longer meets the standards required for hosting Category 3 international matches.
CAF had previously raised concerns about the state of Baba Yara Stadium, along with other major venues in Ghana such as the Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium. With no other CAF-approved Category 3 stadiums in Ghana, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is now required to select an alternative venue outside the country for upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
In a letter to the GFA, CAF recommended that the stadium undergo a comprehensive assessment and refurbishment. CAF also offered assistance by providing an international pitch consultant to help bring the stadium up to CAF/FIFA standards, with the GFA bearing the cost of this support.
The GFA has pledged to collaborate with the government to address the issues and ensure the stadium is ready for future international competitions.
