Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged winner of the keenly contested Akwatia by-election, securing a decisive victory for the government.
According to certified results released by the Electoral Commission (EC), Bediako polled 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast. His closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed only 82 votes. A total of 303 ballots were rejected.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Ernest Kumi, the constituency’s late Member of Parliament. Campaigns leading up to the vote were fiercely contested, with both the NDC and NPP deploying national executives, high-profile party figures, and heavy resources to court voters.
Voting took place across 119 polling stations in the constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The exercise, which officially closed at 5:00 p.m., was closely monitored by security officers, party agents, and independent observers to ensure transparency.
Following the announcement of results, jubilant NDC supporters poured onto the streets of Akwatia, singing and dancing in celebration of their candidate’s victory.
Political analysts describe the outcome as significant, noting that Akwatia has long been regarded as a swing constituency, having alternated between the NDC and NPP in past elections. The NDC’s triumph is therefore being interpreted as a major boost to the governing party’s momentum ahead of the 2028 general elections.
With this win, Bernard Bediako becomes the new Member of Parliament for Akwatia, pledging to continue the work of his predecessor while advancing the constituency’s development agenda in line with government priorities.
