Bayer Leverkusen has secured their maiden Bundesliga title, clinching the 2023/24 championship with a resounding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen. The triumph marks the first time in the club’s history that they have claimed the top spot in German football, ending Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance.
Xabi Alonso’s side entered the match against Werder Bremen knowing that just one more win would seal the Bundesliga title, thanks to their impressive form throughout the season. The team had not suffered a single defeat in both domestic and continental competitions.
The breakthrough for Leverkusen came in the 23rd minute when Victor Boniface converted a penalty awarded after a foul by Jonas Hofmann. Granit Xhaka then doubled the lead with a spectacular long-range effort in the 60th minute. Florian Wirtz completed his hat-trick late in the game, securing a memorable victory for Leverkusen.
This historic triumph comes after Leverkusen had finished as runners-up on five occasions, including the memorable 2001/02 season when a team led by Michael Ballack reached the UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal finals.
With the Bundesliga title now secured, Leverkusen is aiming for a historic treble this season. They have already secured a spot in the DFB-Pokal final and are on the verge of reaching the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.
