Former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to take swift action against individuals responsible for the violence that erupted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11.

The appeal comes in the wake of chaos at the St. Peter’s Polling Station, where a group of unidentified macho men stormed the voting centre, disrupting the election process and reportedly assaulting New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Speaking after the incident, Dr. Bawumia condemned the attacks and demanded that those behind the violence be brought to justice.

“What we have to be clear about is that the people who have perpetrated these acts have been caught on video. I call on the president to take action and all the people in charge of this country, the administration, to take action to bring the perpetrators to book. This is the only way we can deter this in future,” he stated.

He further warned that failure to act would not go unnoticed, promising that justice would eventually be served.

“We have seen them, and let me assure you that should they not be brought to book, we will not forget. They will be brought to book no matter how long it takes. We will not forget what has happened,” Bawumia added.

The violence caused a temporary halt in voting and heightened tensions at the polling station, leading to concerns over voter safety and the credibility of the electoral process. Despite heavy police deployment, law enforcement agencies were unable to prevent or immediately control the incident.

The rerun was organised by the Electoral Commission in 19 polling stations following unresolved disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections, which left Ablekuma North without a Member of Parliament for over seven months.

Although the NPP leadership boycotted the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie opted to contest independently, defying the party’s directive. Her participation, coupled with Friday’s violence, has intensified political friction in the constituency.
