Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene and curb the actions of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters accused of gathering at collation centres with offensive weapons.
In a statement issued on December 9, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over reports of NDC supporters challenging parliamentary results and, in some cases, declaring their candidates as winners without official confirmation. He condemned such actions, highlighting that they undermine Ghana’s democratic values.
Dr. Bawumia called on Mr. Mahama to demonstrate statesmanship by reining in his supporters to preserve peace and unity. He added, “He has won an election; he has not staged a coup d’état. He has a responsibility to contribute to protecting life and property.”
The Vice President also lamented alleged attacks on state institutions, looting of public offices, and threats against individuals, including private property owners.
He warned that if such actions persist, individuals may resort to self-defense, risking further violence. Dr. Bawumia concluded by urging the NDC and its leadership to prioritize the nation’s interest over partisan motives.
