President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his recent State of the Nation address, expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Bawku, describing it as a tragic situation that is not only destroying a once-thriving town but also diverting resources that could be used for development.
The president highlighted the government’s efforts to address the conflict, including the establishment of a special Bawku Taskforce and increased engagement with factions involved in the chieftaincy dispute. Additionally, four radio stations broadcasting incendiary language and hate speech have been shut down by the National Communications Authority.
In a bid to expedite the resolution of criminal matters arising from the conflict, the Chief Justice has set up specialized courts in Accra and Kumasi. Despite these efforts, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for citizens to contribute to creating a peaceful atmosphere, urging them to take the “See Something, Say Something” campaign by the Ministry of National Security seriously.
The president lamented that the conflict in Bawku has turned the town into an attractive hub for mischief-makers and extremists from neighboring countries. He stressed the importance of finding a lasting solution to the conflict to ensure the security and development of the area.
