Barker-Vormawor Granted ¢20k Bail After Three Unsuccessful Attempts

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in the anti-galamsey protests organized by Democracy Hub, has been granted bail of ¢20,000 after three previous unsuccessful attempts. This development occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Barker-Vormawor had been arrested during a demonstration against illegal mining, locally referred to as galamsey, which has caused significant environmental harm in Ghana. The protest, aimed at raising awareness about the destructive practice, saw the participation of several activists.

Earlier, his bail applications were denied by both the Accra High Court and the Circuit Court. The police arrested him for alleged unlawful activities during the protest, although the details of his misconduct are still being investigated.

One notable incident leading to his arrest involved him removing the keys from a police van at the protest site. Despite these legal challenges, Barker-Vormawor has remained steadfast in his opposition to galamsey and continues to push for environmental reforms and stronger accountability in combating illegal mining.
