Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to reject a request for an emergency recall of Parliament, describing it as an act of treating the House as personal property.
In a letter dated November 22, 2024, the Majority Leader and his caucus suggested November 28 and 29 as potential dates to reconvene Parliament to address urgent matters. However, Speaker Bagbin insisted that parliamentary activities would remain suspended until after the December 7 general elections.
Expressing frustration over the decision, Afenyo-Markin accused the Speaker of creating an impasse in Parliament.
“And this is going to my colleagues in the NDC. Look at the shutdown they are doing in Parliament. Today, the Speaker of Parliament has taken Parliament as his personal property. As and when it pleases him, he opens Parliament,” he said in an interview with Joy News.
Afenyo-Markin argued that despite a court ruling in favor of the Majority Caucus on a related matter, Speaker Bagbin refused to reconvene Parliament to allow government business to proceed. He lamented the lack of cooperation and called for a more democratic approach to managing parliamentary affairs.
