Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has indefinitely adjourned parliamentary proceedings following heated disputes between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) members regarding which caucus holds the Majority in Parliament. The decision was announced on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
Bagbin cited the lack of quorum as the primary reason for the adjournment, noting that despite having enough members to conduct business, there weren’t sufficient numbers to make decisions. He referenced a communication from the Supreme Court, which ordered a stay on his earlier ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant. However, he did not elaborate on the Court’s directive, leaving questions about the status of the affected seats unanswered.
The seats in question—Agona West (Cynthia Morrison), Fomena (Andrew Asiamah), Suhum (Kwadjo Asante), and Amenfi Central (Peter Kwakye Ackah)—were declared vacant by Bagbin on October 17. The Supreme Court’s intervention has since halted that ruling, further complicating the political landscape.
Earlier in the day, NPP MPs vacated the Chamber in protest, leaving the NDC to occupy both sides of the House. This absence contributed to the lack of quorum, prompting Bagbin to adjourn proceedings “sine die” (indefinitely). The adjournment leaves the immediate future of Parliament uncertain as both parties await the Supreme Court’s ruling on the contested seats.
