The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The by-election was organised to fill the vacancy created following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

Baba Jamal secured 10,884 votes to defeat his main contender from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yusif Ali Baba, who polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes, Ibrahim Idrissu obtained 43 votes, and Kanor David secured 104 votes.

A total of 16,928 valid votes were cast, with 120 rejected ballots, bringing the total votes cast to 17,048.

The results largely aligned with projections by research firm Global InfoAnalytics, which had forecast a strong lead for the NDC candidate based on a pre-election survey conducted between February 28 and March 1.

The victory reinforces the NDC’s hold on the Ayawaso East seat and marks Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia and as Ghana’s former High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Voter turnout across several polling centres was described as low but peaceful, with electoral and security officials supervising the process.
