More than 40,000 registered voters in Ayawaso East are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament in a closely watched by-election.

The poll was necessitated by the death of the constituency’s MP, , in January 2026, which left the parliamentary seat vacant.

Following internal primaries, the (NPP) selected Baba Ali as its candidate, while the (NDC) picked former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, to contest the seat.

The (EC) has assured residents of a smooth, transparent, and orderly voting process.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, said all necessary measures had been put in place to ensure a credible election. He cautioned against unlawful acts, particularly vote-buying, stressing that any proven case of electoral malpractice would attract sanctions.

“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision,” he said.
